Vintage brass holy water jug with sprout, from Orissa in India. The holy water jug is used in Hindu rituals.
Hand-embossed in dhokra style.
During the daily puja at the home altar, the jug is used to pour a small amount of water over the gods.
The water comes from sacred rivers of India, such as the Ganges or the Yamuna.
The holy water jugs come from Orissa and Bengal (states in eastern India), and are ornately decorated using the dhokra technique, a special method of lost-wax bronze casting in which the objects to be cast are built up in very thin strands of wax.
Origin: Kerala and Orissa/Bengal
Age: 40 – 80 years
